Week 3

Detroit Tigers Ball Bag Matt Murtha
Flying Squirrels ??? Donkeys
The Detroit Tigers Ball Bag has been a part of WSEM since the beginning. It has never received its due respect. In fact, it often gets bitched about, even though it is much less of a danger or obstruction than the buckets used by many fields. This is the first week in the history of league or tournament play, however, that the bag has stepped up its game and helped out the action on the field in a big way. In the first game against the Commandos, Daniel Egan ripped a shot up the middle; Baggy stopped it dead in its tracks in the circle to be easily picked up for an out. Later, in game two, a lazy pop fly between the pitcher and outfield bounced sharply off Ryan Bullard's leg back into the circle; Baggy read it perfectly, and snared the ball so it could be picked up for the unconventional groundout. Finally, in the third game of the day (game one against the Donkeys), a sharp hit similar to Egan's got past Mike Constanti on the mound, but not Baggy. Baggy made a fantastic play to stop the ball, but ejected a second ball alongside the ball in play immediately behind the pitchers' circle. Constanti alertly picked up both balls to secure the out. Baggy may not be a conventional player, but unconventional is what we are all about! Matt Murtha made his return to the Drey this weekend for his only scheduled games against his former teams. And he brought his A-game. Alex Shore may even contest that Murphy might still be a Squirrel secret agent after the events of this at bat (1:45 - 2:00). True to form, he kept lines like these coming all day long. We may have previously geeked out about how fun it is to share the field with Mmmmm, and the change to a red jersey has not changed the man at all. The closing line from that linked article still rings true: "His passion for playing the game, easy going attitude, timely mischief in the moment, along with the ability to engage and entertain any company in any context unequivocally makes Matt "Mmmm" Murtha the poster child for Wiffler's everywhere." I envy the teams that get two series with the Donkeys this season!
